Some people draw and paint landscapes or still life...

Others sculpt busts or abstract metal art...

I design floor plans of houses.

I'm not a talented artist by any means, but I have always had a bit of a photographic memory, especially for places I've been. In my mind's eye I can often imagine how a home would look while walking through its hallways and exploring the many nooks and crannies often found particularly in older homes. My mind can see them, but I am not skilled enough to draw out what I see. Instead, I am able to draw out a floor plan a la rat maze style that gives the general idea of how a house's walls and spaces would look from above were it to actually exist.

Blame it on my mother for dragging me to model homes and open houses for years in my youth. Accredit it to 7 years in the apartment management business walking people through the different features of hundreds of different apartment layouts (before I became a nurse that is). Chalk it up to watching too many hours of This Old House and HGTV. Wherever the inclination to design floor plans came from, I find it as cathartic as painting, more relaxing than reading a cherished novel, and as creative as any other art form out there...

It's just not as aesthetically pleasing on paper. lol
